Good Morning From Asbury Park!

BEN IS BACK opens this week. Both Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges are receiving high praise for their performances.  Hedges is on an upward trajectory and this film gives him plenty to work with.  Julia trades in her flashy smile for the fierceness of a mother who wants desperately to save her son.  This story touches a raw nerve in this country and at a time this crisis has come close to everywhere.  Or as Jeff Strickler of the Minneapolis Star Tribune says “This is an intimate, incredibly tense trauma about a troubled family battling raw emotional pains, a bare-bones and bare-knuckled look at the destructive powers of addiction.” LEARN MORE AND WATCH THE TRAILER.

GREEN BOOK is held over for the fourth week, and people keep stopping us in the street to say how much they enjoyed this film. Both stars – Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali – have command of their roles and their chemistry makes this buddy road trip all the more enjoyable.  Joshua Rothkopf from Time Out summarizes it as “Call this actors’ duet sentimental and simplistic at your own peril.  Green Book may well move you, possibly to tears, at the thought of real social change and kindness (at a time when we need it badly.)”  Nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Picture, and earning a Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Mortenson and Ali respectively.  LEARN MORE AND WATCH THE TRAILER

FREE SOLO is held over as well, and this one is both riveting and thought-provoking.  On the ground, the climber Honnold seems the odd, self- absorbed athlete, keeping himself focused and strangely humorless. On the mountains, he is death-defying and exuberant, most alive when he is doing what he loves, challenging himself. This carefully constructed documentary brings it all to a head when the climber takes his experience to task, and we dare you not to hold your breath during the last half hour of the film. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune said of the film,  ‘The tensions inherent in Honnold’s singular life are many. “Free Solo” give you just enough of that life on terra firma to make the heights truly dazzling.”  LEARN MORE AND WATCH THE TRAILER

REMEMBERING THE BEACH CINEMA:  As you know, we’ve acquired the BEACH CINEMA in neighboring Bradley Beach and we are currently renovating and updating the building. Many of you attended a movie throughout the long history of the cinema and we’d like to hear from you. Do you have a favorite memory of the Beach Cinema? Let us know. Write us at The ShowRoom Cinema.

FUTURE FILMS WE ARE ANTICIPATING: Movies listed as “Coming Soon” are films The ShowRoom Cinema would like to present and is actively trying to book. However, we don’t always know if or when we will be able to actually get them from distributors. We set showtimes on a week-by-week basis and will announce them as soon as we can confirm them. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We look forward to bringing these films to THE SHOWROOM CINEMA and want you to know how much you support our theater by seeing them with us:  ON THE BASIS OF SEX; AT ETERNITY’S GATE;  IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK;  THE OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS; STAN AND OLLIE; COLD WAR
