Two weeks ago, we screened THE CATCHER WAS A SPY as part of our special, New York Film Critics’ Series. Usually only a one-time, special preview, but due to the tremendous response (it sold-out), and requests from those of you who weren’t able to attend that night, we are bringing it back for a regular run. Similarly, we had anticipated saying goodbye to RBG after 7 popular weeks, but attendance for this inspirational film remains unabated so, Ruth will stay for another week. Several months ago, long before its recent release, we heard anticipation for WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR. Programming is a tricky business that relies on multiple factors, many of them out of our control, but we lobbied for this poignant doc and are pleased you waited to see it here. Enjoy.
Sunday morning also brings a one day only screening of a filmed theatrical production of the musical OKLAHOMA!, starring the Tony Award winning Broadway triple threat Hugh Jackman. Wolverine? Yes, that Hugh Jackman.
The portrait of a man whom we all think we know, WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? takes an intimate look at America’s favorite neighbor: Mister Rogers. This emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius, Fred Rogers, who inspired those around him and generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination. Don’t leave before the credits are finished for an extra special treat. From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) WATCH THE TRAILER.
“Neville has created a film that operates both as a dewy-eyed nostalgia trip and stirring appeal for civility.” – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
THE CATCHER WAS A SPY is a gripping, stranger-than-fiction espionage thriller, brilliantly filmed, that brings to life the incredible true story of Moe Berg, the professional baseball player who became a World War II spy. A Jewish, Princeton-educated, multilingual catcher for the Boston Red Sox with a closely-guarded private life, the enigmatic Berg (Paul Rudd) was already a man of mystery when, in 1944, the US government’s wartime intelligence agency enlisted his services. His mission: go behind enemy lines in Europe to assassinate the Nazi’s chief nuclear scientist before the Germans develop an atomic bomb. This is Paul Rudd’s year. Directed by Ben Lewin. WATCH THE TRAILER.
“This is a thriller with a lot more soul than most, and it deserves to be observed by a wide audience.” – Jennie Kermode, Eye for Film
You can’t spell truth without Ruth! RBG chronicles the unique personal journey of the diminutive, quiet U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who, at the age of 84, has developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. The documentary should be seen by all young filmmakers as the technique of blending text, old photos, audio and current video is flawless. Featuring the voices of a diverse group of Ginsburg’s fans, including Antonin Scalia, Bill Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Lilly Ledbetter, Nina Totenberg, Orrin G. Hatch, Rush Limbaugh, Sharron Frontiero, The Notorious B.I.G., and more. Directed with panache by Betsy West and Julie Cohen. WATCH THE TRAILER.
“‘RBG’ is a treasure trove of historical information, landmark court cases, and a glimpse into the mind and world of this living legend. Long may she reign.” – Diane Pershing, Malibu Times
GREAT STAGE ON SCREEN presents OKLAHOMA!, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ground-breaking musical. This is the Emmy-winning production in which Hugh Jackman made his name, from London’s National Theatre, filmed in 35mm and digitally remastered. Directed by Trevor Nunn, director of Cats, Starlight Express and Les Misérables and featuring new choreography by Susan Stroman, this production of Oklahoma! broke box office records in London and was recognized by the Hammerstein estate as the definitive version of this immensely popular musical. Oh, what a beautiful morning! This Sunday, July 8th at 11:00 AM only. Purchase your tickets in advance or at the Box Office.
“NOT TO BE MISSED” SPECIAL EVENTS: YELLOW SUBMARINE 50th Anniversary. This animated favorite was restored in 4K digital resolution, though no automated software was used in order to preserve the original, hand-drawn artwork. Instead, the film’s photochemical elements were restored by hand, frame-by-frame. The famous Yellow Submarine soundtrack and score were also remixed in 5.1 stereo surround sound at Abbey Road Studios by mix engineer Peter Cobbin. Two screenings on Sunday, July 15th – at noon and 7:30 PM.
The 7:30pm screening will include an appearance by Dr. Ken Womack, noted Beatles author and Dean of School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Monmouth University, who will speak prior to the film and sign copies of his books. PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE as both screenings will likely sell out.
