The “Freshest” Movies are Here This Week

On Friday August 17th, we’re pleased to open MCQUEEN, a critically acclaimed documentary that currently holds a 100% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.  And Sunday, August 19th brings the 5th iteration of HORROR CHURCH with FRANKENSTEIN (1931), 100% Fresh and the film Elliott Stein of the Village Voice has called “The most influential horror film ever made.” Remember to purchase your tickets in advance on the weekend, particularly if the weather is less than “beach-friendly”.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS:

MCQUEEN is a personal look at the extraordinary life, career and artistry of the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Through exclusive interviews with his closest friends and family, recovered archives, exquisite visuals and music, McQueen is an authentic celebration and thrilling portrait of an inspired yet tortured fashion visionary. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and co-directed/written by Peter Ettedgui. LEARN MORE AND WATCH THE TRAILER.

“’McQueen’ is a haunting biography that goes beyond even that live runway experience to conjure the visionary himself, in as much as he may ever be known – and in a way even his savagely beautiful clothes themselves cannot.” – Nathalie Atkinson, Globe and Mail

From visionary filmmaker Spike Leecomes BLACKkKLANSMAN, the incredible true story of  Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. In the early 1970’s Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.  LEARN MORE AND WATCH THE TRAILER.

“This is one of [Lee’s] best films because he marries the anger and intensity with the visual restraint and poetry that he’s so good at.” – Christy Lemire, What the Flick?

Tim Wardle’s acclaimed documentary THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS is the most amazing, incredible, remarkable true story ever told. Times three. Separated at birth, and adopted by three different families, triplets are reunited by astonishing coincidence. This fairy-tale reunion sets in motion a series of events that unearth an unimaginable secret. Winner of Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award, the film is an exuberant celebration of family that transforms into a thriller with colossal implications and proof that life is truly is stranger than fiction. LEARN MORE AND WATCH THE TRAILER.

“Devastating and profound, Three Identical Strangers is gripping docu-cinema in its rawest form.” – Christopher Llewellyn Reed, Hammer to Nail

YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS:

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS – THE MUSICAL. This breathtakingly beautiful Tony® Award-winning Broadway musical, inspired by the Oscar® winning MGM film, tells the impassioned story of discovering love in the ‘City of Light’. Featuring the gorgeous music and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin, stunning designs, and show-stopping choreography. With a record-setting 28 five-star reviews from critics, An American in Paris is coming from London’s West End to a cinema near you. An American GI’s chance encounter with a beautiful young dancer leads Paris to become the backdrop to a sensuous, modern romance of art, friendship and love in the aftermath of war… Experience this “old-fashioned, big-hearted spare-no-expense Broadway romance” (The Wall Street Journal). Thursday, September 20th at 7:30 PM only. LEARN MORE & WATCH THE TRAILER.

ONE NIGHT ONLY: JOAN JETT, BAD REPUTATION. From the press release: Joan Jett is so much more than “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” It’s true, she became mega-famous from the number-one hit, and that fame intensified with the music video’s endless play on MTV. But that staple of popularity can’t properly define a musician. Jett put her hard work in long before the fame, ripping it up onstage as the backbone of the hard-rock legends The Runaways, and influencing many musicians—both her cohort of punk rockers and generations of younger bands. Bad Reputation gives you a wild ride as Jett and her close friends tell you how it really was in the burgeoning ’70s punk scene, and their interviews are laced with amazing archival footage. The theme is clear: even though people tried to define Jett and keep her stuck to one hit, she never compromised. Wednesday, September 26th.  LEARN MORE & WATCH THE TRAILER.

NOTE WELL:

PARKING IN THE PARK:  Asbury Park has evolved a great deal over the past few years, and one of the costs of that evolution is competition for street parking. Allow yourself plenty of time to find parking when driving to the theatre, especially on the weekends. We recommend 2 of the best kept secrets – the City Hall parking lot on Main Street with its entrance on Bangs Ave. and the train station lot on Springwood Avenue. Both are striped to accommodate hourly parking at the pay stations all over town. And while we’re on the subject of parking, have you tried the parking app “Asbury Park”?  No more searching for a pay station, and you can even set it up to remind you when your time is about to expire. Available at Google Play and iTunes. We don’t want you to miss even a minute of our fantastic films!

FUTURE FILMS WE ARE ANTICIPATING: Movies listed as “Coming Soon” are films The ShowRoom Cinema would like to present and is actively trying to book. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
