The Oscar-Nominated Shorts

We say goodbye to LADY BIRD this week, not easy to do after all its popularity, but not to worry: all of our current films are still Oscar contenders. We begin our annual screening of the popular OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS with the films in the LIVE ACTION and ANIMATION categories. We’ll add DOCUMENTARY entries to the mix next week. Sticking around – THE SHAPE OF WATER, the film that has received the most Academy Award nominations this year, and I, TONYA, the recipient of 3 nominations and one of the most unexpected entries. Impress your friends at the Oscar party with your knowledge of the nominated films, picked up here at THE SHOWROOM CINEMA.

We are one of the few area theatres to showcase the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS and they have become a hit, with many of our screenings selling out. We’ve staggered our schedule of the films so guests can take in two of the programs in one day if they choose. The LIVE ACTION SHORTS category: DeKalb Elementary, The Silent Child, My Nephew Emmett, The Eleven O’Clock, Watu Wote/All of Us. The ANIMATED SHORTS category consist of these 5 titles: Dear Basketball, Negative Space, Lou, Revolting Rhymes, Garden Party. Three additional films are included in this group as well, Lost Property Office, Coin Operated, and Achoo. Purchase your tickets in advance with this link, particularly if you plan on attending on the weekend. All of the films nominated in the DOCUMENTARY SHORTS category will open Friday, February 16. Set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963, THE SHAPE OF WATER is an other-worldly fairy tale set in a hidden, high-security government laboratory where lonely Elisa is trapped in a life of silence (she is mute) and isolation. Her life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda discover a secret classified experiment. From Guillermo del Toro, director of PAN’S LABYRINTH and HELLBOY, the film has received 13 Oscar nominations, including one for Best Director for del Toro, and Best Picture, Best Actress for Sally Hawkins, Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer, and Best Supporting Actor for Richard Jenkins. “A picturesque fairytale told by a masterful storyteller, this monster movie from director Guillermo del Toro is the most emotionally resonant of his career.” – Kiko Martinez, San Antonio Current

While watching the women’s figure skating competitions at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, you might recall the sensational story about two young skaters named Nancy and Tonya. I, TONYA is the darkly comedic tale of American figure skater Tonya Harding and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy has forever been defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived and disastrously executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. The film has been nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Actress for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actress for Allison Janney, and Best Editing. Directed by Craig Gillespie. LEARN MORE.

“A broader biopic than you may be expecting … very, very funny, but also moving and tough … That’s the kind of movie this is: not the kind you think, to its absolute credit.” – CJ Johnson, ABC Radio (Australia)
