As is customary in Mr. Desplechin’s work, there’s a lot of dialogue in Ismael’s Ghosts, but this movie’s nerve endings vibrate most avidly and tenderly in scenes where not a word is spoken.
“The film balances comedy and drama very nicely – it’s charming, funny, and earns every one of its big emotional beats. You know how it’s all going to end up, but are more than happy to go along for the ride.” – Glenn Kenny, THE NEW YORK TIMES
“Desplechin delivers with flying colours thanks to an excellent cast and a sometimes serious, sometimes funny story that never lets up or becomes predictable.” – Lisa Nesselson, SCREEN INTERNATIONAL
