Two new movies this week are about finding more than meets the eye.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICE: MYSTERIES AND MENTORS OF RICKY JAY: Ricky Jay is a world-renowned magician, author, historian and actor (seen frequently on tv and in movies) — and a performer who regularly provokes astonishment from even the most jaded audiences. Come and be delighted. Some are calling this the best documentary of 2013 so far.

THE ANGELS’ SHARE: A Scottish comedy, a new dad Robbie vows to turn over a new leaf after narrowly avoiding jail. A visit to a whisky distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives. Directed by Ken Loach and written by Paul Laverty.

LEVON STAYS ON: Ain’t in it for My Health: A movie about Levon Helm continues for another week at The ShowRoom. Don’t miss this positively upbeat encore for a founding member of The Band that chronicles his first studio album in 25 years.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film festival, legendary director Ken Loach , one of Britain’s most distinguished and respected filmmakers, who makes tough, uncompromising films about a beleaguered working class with poetry and humor, and longtime writing partner Paul Laverty (The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Bread and Roses and My Name is Joe), present an engagingly off-kilter new film, The Angels’ Share. Robbie, a young ne’er do well (Paul Brannigan), a broke new father with a good heart is in serious trouble with the law. When he holds his newborn son for the first time, roguish Robbie is determined that the boy will have a better life, one with more opportunities than he has been offered in this insular, blue collar world. But first Robbie must sort out a variety of pressing problems –his girlfriend’s family wants to do him harm and run him out of town being first and foremost among them. He is given a lucky break by a judge who shows mercy, granting him community service instead of jail. Here he meets Rhino, Albert and Mo, former petty criminals also down on their luck.

THIS WEEK: Joining the French Canadian comedy STARBUCK this week is RENOIR. Set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915, Jean Renoir — son of the Impressionist painter, Pierre-Auguste — returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I. At his side is Andrée, a young woman who rejuvenates, enchants, and inspires both father and son. Not to be missed, Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times wrote “Renoir is a lush, involving film.”

Taking a look at another facet of culture, HAVA NAGILA is a documentary romp through the history, mystery and meaning of the great Jewish standard. High on fun and entertainment, HAVA NAGILA (The Movie) is also surprisingly profound, tapping into universal themes about the importance of joy, the power of music and the resilient spirit of a people.

EARTH DAY SPECIAL: BIDDER 70, a personal portrait film, follows Tim, a University of Utah student, who on December 19, 2008, in a dazzling act of civil disobedience, derailed the outgoing Bush administration’s illegal Bureau of Land Management oil and gas auction. As Bidder #70, Tim bid $1.8 million and won 22,000 pristine acres surrounding Utah’s National Parks. He had no intention to pay or drill. Tim was indicted on two federal felonies with penalties of up to ten years in prison. After the film, we’ll host a Q&A session with the Sierra Club’s Nicole Dallara and Food & Water Watch’s Rachel Dawn Davis. And later that night, you can catch the live interview online with Tim DeChristopher, just one day after he’s been released from federal prison. BIDDER 70 illuminates how the choices we make determine our future and the world we live in. As luck would have it, Earth Day falls on Monday so we are offering this special film for our Monday pricing of $5 at 7p, April 22nd.

THIS WEEK: Go back into the early 20th century with Leonie, a film about the life and relationships of Leonie Gilmour, the mother of the acclaimed artist and architect Isamu Noguchi.
